Monel 400
Monel 400 is a nickel-copper solid solution strengthening alloy. This alloy is characterized by moderate strength, good weldability, good general corrosion resistance and toughness. Useful at temperatures up to 538°C (1000°F). Alloy 400 has good resistance to rapid brackish water or seawater where cavitation and corrosion resistance are required. It is particularly resistant to degassing of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. Alloy 400 is slightly magnetic at room temperature.

Applications
Common uses for the Monel 400 include:
• Chlorinated solvents
• Crude oil distillation column
• Ethyl Chloride Tablets
• HF alkylation
• HF reboiler
• Marine components
• Marine splash zone cover
• MEA reboiler
• Well Recovery Pump
• Salt production
• salt residue compounds
• Shafting
• Wire mesh for insulation
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 400 is virtually immune to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking under normal circumstances. In general, corrosion resistance is very good in reducing environments but poor in oxidizing conditions.
Alloy 400 is resistant to most alkalis, salts, water (including brine or brackish water), food, organic matter, and ambient conditions at room temperature.
This alloy is not useful for highly oxidizing acids such as nitric and nitrous acids. It is resistant to sulfuric acid (80%) and hydrochloric acid (20%).
Oxidizing impurities such as ferric chloride, ferric sulfate, chromate, nitrate, peroxide, and citrate can cause the alloy to attack in relatively light media.
